Window and Door Testing

Each region of the country makes demands on its doors and windows. In the U.S. Midwest, they're interested in keeping out the cold, in the Southwest, the heat. And on the coasts, they're interested in keeping out the occasional hurricane-blown tree limb, in addition to the cold and the heat.

Stork Materials Technology is parent company to a unique window and door testing laboratory in Wausau, Wisconsin.  Highly-qualified scientific personnel and state-of-the-art equipment have combined to create a facility that has been accredited by such regulatory bodies as National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), American Society of Testing & Materials (ASTM), Miami-Dade County, Florida, and New York State.

The Stork Materials Technology facility in Wausau supports the fenestration industry with a broad range of testing and consultation capabilities and methods. Some of the services offered include:

Air/water infiltration  Air and water infiltration testing is critical for judging the suitability of a window for a particular area or building. These techniques can be combined with variable wind velocities for a customized testing program.

Structural testing  Structural tests are conducted to evaluate the integrity of a door, wall or window, by simulating high interior and exterior wind pressures.

Impact and wind load cycling  Simulated hurricane testing includes use of an impact cannon to fire a 2"x4" lumber piece at a window or door sample, and subsequent simulated wind load cycling. These tests meet the protocols of the Southern Building Code Council (Miami Dade County) and the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI).

Acoustical Testing  Architects and engineers specify different Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Outdoor/Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) ratings for projects, depending on the building environment, i.e., along freeways, near airports or hospitals, etc. Our in-lab acoustical testing services use two specially designed reverberation chambers to assign an STC/OITC rating. State-of-the-art computerized equipment is used to determine these ratings in the laboratory or the field.

Related Testing  Hardware cycling, vinyl material evaluations, impact glass breakage, and forced entry resistance are a few of the other testing services offered.
