ABSTRACT
Corrosion has a vast impact on the global and domestic economy, and affects a wide array of industries in its various forms. Many different forms and mechanisms of corrosion can trigger failure in bare or coated components. Identifying the most significant failure agent is the first step toward protecting your part or product.
The first portion of this presentation will cover common corrosion failure mechanisms, including general corrosion, pitting, galvanic corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, concentration cell corrosion, microbiologically-influenced corrosion, intergranular attack, erosion-corrosion, and dealloying. The fundamentals of each corrosion mechanism will be addressed, and illustrative examples will be included to show how to distinguish between the various corrosion phenomena.
The second portion will focus on focus on paint and coating materials, along with failures that can result from factors such as improper surface preparation and overly-aggressive service conditions. Examples of various component failures will be included for illustrative purposes.
Steven J. Suess is an expert in the field of corrosion analysis, and is a Sr. Metallurgist at Stork Technimet, Inc. He is also a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin and a NACE (formerly National Association of Corrosion Engineers) Material Selection/Design Specialist. Steve has written several papers and articles on the subject including such titles as, "Analysis of Industrial Corrosion Failures," "Corrosion in Stainless Steels," "Recognition and Analysis of Corrosion Failure Mechanisms," and "Avoidance of Feature Misinterpretation in SCC Failures."
Todd R. Seversen is a Coatings Engineer at Stork Technimet, Inc. He routinely serves clients from a wide variety of industries with regard to coating evaluation, cleaning and surface preparation, troubleshooting, material selection and specification testing. One of his primary functions is to provide consulting services and provide solutions to various paint and coating problems. He was previously employed as a Coatings Process Chemist at Modine Manufacturing Company.
