RoHS summer deadline causing major challenges for manufacturers: Stork experts providing customized compliance programs

ALL LOCATIONS – May 23, 2006

A compliance deadline is looming for manufacturers who sell appliances on the EU market. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive, or RoHS, limits the levels of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in electrical and electronic components or equipment sold or used in the European Union. The directive, introduced in February 2003 as EU Directive 2002/95/EC and 2002/96/ED, goes into effect July 1, 2006.

Stork laboratories across the United States have built testing programs to help clients surmount the rigorous RoHS restrictions, acquiring specialized equipment and researching the complex methodologies required to test for compliance. Stork chemistry teams are providing their clients accurate, precise results that report the total levels of RoHS elements and compounds and fully meet RoHS requirements.

On the heels of the RoHS directive are other local, state, national, and global restrictions on hazardous materials, such as WEEE [Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive], pending legislation in China and Japan, and U.S. regulations like California SB20 and Maine LD1892. Because of the growing trend toward “green” legislation regarding waste management and water and soil quality issues, Stork recommends that manufacturers prepare themselves for long-range, permanent environmental compliance planning and materials testing.

Stork experts are standing by to help you answer your RoHS questions and launch your customized compliance program. Contact info.smt@stork.com or send an information request to learn more about RoHS and other directives.
