Whether it's the failure of a very large component or multiple simultaneous component failures, some problems need to be investigated in-situ and/or onsite.
In these situations, Stork materials and metallurgical experts will come to you. The failure analysis investigation may involve examination of cracks, corrosion, welding defects or any number of other issues that caused the component to be out of service. |  |

What parts and products require onsite investigation?
Typical examples of components that may require an on-site investigation are:
- Storage tanks
- Installed pipes and tubes
- Shafts and journals
- Bearings
- Housings for pumps and gears
- Paper-making equipment such as rolls and processing equipment
- Other large parts or systems
Which failure analysis or materials testing methods can be used onsite?
An onsite investigation by Stork experts involves the same methodical evaluation techniques as those used in the laboratory, but the examinations are conducted at the failure location. The investigation may involve any of the following activities:
- Visual inspection (magnifying glass and portable scopes)
- Photographic documentation
- Nondestructive testing, including magnetic particle, liquid penetrant and ultrasonic testing
- Portable hardness testing (Brinell, Equotip or MIC-10)
- Ultrasonic thickness testing
- Positive material identification (PMI) for chemical analysis evaluation
- Metallographic evaluation on un-etched and etched surfaces (Rollscope)
- Replication of surfaces (Acetate tape)
- Removal of specimens for subsequent laboratory analysis
